I am a brand new member here and am "nearing" retirement as a high school teacher and looking to start putting a dent in my bucket list of hunts. I have been a whitetail, turkey, and coyote hunter for a long time but am looking to get started on some western hunts. I have four years left until retirement, and am limited to the time of year I can take off until then. These basically keeps me away from Elk and Mule Deer hunts until I retire (with the exception of Nebraska's muzzleloader deer season in December). I am looking at a cougar hunt in one of the states where I could hunt during my winter break (basically Dec 22-Jan 3rd). I am not limited in any way physically-I am in very good condition in regard to trekking through difficult terrain and weather. I would of course like to bag the biggest cat I can, but most important would be the quality of guide service/hounds. I don't need immaculate lodging, or a bunch of amenities. I want to hunt cougars, with a high probability of success, with people who know what they are doing-period. I am leaving the cost of the hunt open. I have looked around for a while and see that most hunts vary from about $6,000-$7,500. I would also mention that I would be looking to book this hunt for December of 2024 most likely. This will allow me to budget for the hunt, and maybe allow me the possibility of drawing a tag in a more desirable location?? I look forward to any advice those of you on here might have. Thank you.

I’d do an internet search for the states you are most interested in. Check reviews and state game and fish.

I've been doing plenty of internet searches, but of course you never really know who the quality outfitters are based on websites. That is why I like to rely on forums (actual people) to provide some advice. I will be contacting various state's natural resources departments to help me find an outfitter as well, but I am hoping to get some responses on here, as well as other forums regarding experiences with various cougar hunting outfitters.
