Your task, should you accept, is to help one determine how best to stock up. You see, I've been mulling over some thoughts on my hunting preferences here lately and thought I'd hit the boards to see what others were thinking (and using) as well.

There are many species that I love to hunt, but I want to keep each discussion very focused and very specific. For the purpose of this discussion, my interests here are focused on DEER & ELK.

Now here's the meat of my inquiry.... you are to identify the following that you would use:

1) What rifle would you use for each?

2) What bow would you use for each?

I have my thoughts but will chime in later after I see what some of y'alls is! I'll let this discussion run for a while and then compile the responses (along with responses that I receive from other inquiries) and post them up on my blog (and here of course!!!).

.243 or 30/30 for deer. 30/30, 30-06, or 300 win. for elk.

I kind of rotate for deer after each kill. Normal rotation is .243, .25-06, .270 WSM and .308. In past years I have even used my .222 and .22-250. Never had the opportunity to hunt elk, hopefully someday I can. I would use the .270 WSM or .308.

The 30-06 is the main feature for deer, have shot the one with the 250 but was a head shot, the 300 was mainly used for moose up north as they are twice the size of elk, have used it on elk but only if I can get close enough for a head or neck shot, I think it does too much damage on elk but if its the only opportunity you'll ever have at harvesting an elk and you have a 300 or larger bore than go for. My Uncle has probably shot 30 elk in his life so far and has only used a 308 on all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've shot elk with a .300 Win. Mag and a 30-06 and none of them was any deader than the others.

Killed my elk with a .270 at 200yrds. but it took three rounds. I like the gun and I know how to shoot it. I think that is the most important...shot placement. Hunted deer this year with a savage .243 that can shoot three shot groups in the same hole (I have the target taped to the stock so that I know it is not the gun!) and I did fine with that. I think that what you feel comfortable shooting is always the best gun.

I have taken Many Many Deer with a .243 However in the last few years I have used my 30.06 mostly , occaissionally I will take my .270.

I have Never taken an Elk the Closest thing I have ever taken to an elk is a Red Stag! I took him with my .270 at 200 yards.

Havent hunted Elk, but would use my .270, as well as for deer too which I do. For bows, any NON split limb compound with 80% let off. It doesnt matter high dollar or low dollar on a bow, they all do the same thing down range, just that speed is preferable--but not to the point of creating more noise which is what happens to a degree. 250 ~300fps is plenty. Anything over that is IMO unnecessary.

My preference is a 270 win or 30-06. I've taken rocky mountain elk and mulies cleanly with both calibers out to 225 yards.

No experience with bows but I am considering crossbows once Colorado regulations give'em a fair shake.
