I have been box trapping squirrels at my wifes house in michigan. She is over run by black/ gray ones. As I catch em I put them in the garage to protect them till I take em to my woods and release them. However, She just came in from her bike ride sort laughing. " I think that squirrel is a bit upset, as I walked my bike into the garage he started hissing and chattering at me, I thought there was another animals in there he was soo loud "

Not the sort of excitement you had Hassell..but I think had she done it in the dark I might have heard another statement from her...not as sweet as her first.

I will try and make this short. In my teen years we had coon treed in hole in tree about 20 ft up in fork. I being young and agile climbed tree. When reached Y could see coon. Had one leg swinging other in fork half way over hole one hand on stick for poking and other onlimb dad starts scwalling and I start poking coon with stick. Coon decides wants out of hole, head pass foot and not very happy body wouldn't fit. (Solution move foot)I did I hit the ground before coon (I THINK). I still don't remenber going back to truck that night.Coon weighted 52pounds I guess dogs got him I dont remember. Learned good lesson. Never volunteered to fall first after that put more thought into it. LOL I have witnessed coons jumping out of trees 30 ft up and hit the ground and start running not this ole boy. That coon was so big his belly fur was rubbed off but I got 75.00 for hit fur buyer said would have been 125.00 if it hadnt rubbed it belly bear. This was close to a mink ranch so I assume he was eating real good to reach that size. I didn'teven have a strecther that he would fit sold him fresh.

Great story BIGD, the falling part is one I'll never forget, when we lived at the coast in Dads air force days, there was nothing I wouldn't climb, went to the bush with my two older brothers, still remember Mom saying to my brothers-keep an eye on richard and don't let him climb any tree's, well - with brothers exploring there was some beautiful 150 ft. populars that was calling that 5 yr. old HA!!, up I go, that old top was bent right over cause there was only a couple ft. to go, Well, the whole top breaks off, to this day I can still picture that trip down, feet first then head first and my brothers yelling and watching, well the good Lord wasn't ready for me cause my foot got caught in a forked branch and stopped the fall, was 1 ft. short of being able to touch the ground.

You know what they say falling isn't to bad, but it's the sudden stops that will hurt you.

So tell us Rick if we should be so lucky as to find ourselves in the woods with Richard... Do we still have to keep an eye on him ?

I had one as a pet when I was kid, my dad was a high school biolage teacher so we had many different wild pets. Ours, coon got to be a hand full so we let it go. Our favoraite trick was to give it a sugar cookie and watch it was it, it would melt away and id would look for quite a while looking for the cookie.

Have had that given name yelled at me more than a few times but you should really be talking to my Mom on that one.

Rick, You fell over a hundred feet and lived to tell the story. WOW ! What did mom say ?? I hope you learned a leason ! What if you would have hit the ground. Who would take care or you? Do I have to cut down all the trees ? Did your brothers give you a score 10 10 8 on your form ?

I have fallen a few times...guess I never learned still climb too. I have four screws in my ankle to prove it.

A friend of mine who owns a tree service had back troubles. When he first began he had a call for a well paying job. However his back was acting up...but he choose to do the job. He went up 50 feet and grabed a dead limb before he was tied off. He fell and landed on his back. When he woke up he started with his fingers, then his toes and thought wow...I am alive. The owner of the tree saw him fall and said are you ok...Todd's answer, I think so...so he stood up and has never had any more troubles with his back. That is a true story it happened 15 years ago. It worked but not recomended !

I won't tell what Mom said, but you know I never climbed another tree as a kid, if I had hit the ground I wouldn't be typing this, my brothers were going to to leave and go and tell Mom on me, thats why I would never go sky diving, who in their right mind would jump out of a perfectly good airplane!! I've climbed since but when I was involved with mine rescue.

You are a smart man. With death that close, I would most likely be on your same page. I wonder how many boys and girls did not get the second chance that you did. There must have been a good reason for you not to have died that day. Perhaps your mine rescue ?

I am curious. How are you with heights ? Do they bother you at all...like when you look over a cliff or the edge of a tall building ?

None of that stuff bothers me, when I was finishing up with my flying instructor before I was to go for my final pilots test, she asked me what maneuver's I wanted to practice , before I could answer, I guess it was the devilish look in my eyes, she said spins, right on I said, stall the plane, yoke straight back full left rudder, the plane flips over upside down then straight down to earth spinning and spinning;; now thats fun!!!!

I used to enjoy climbing tall trees as a kid and now I dont like climbing to the top of a 24' extension ladder.
