This is pretty wild and just happened this morning, we have this old shack that we call a cabin, was built in the 30"s or 40's used for storage, leaks etc., I set up in there for shooting and is where I got the last yote from, its a 100 yds. from the house and use the traffic noise to get out there quietly, being Sunday and not to much traffic it takes a while, standing by my loading chute and corral waiting for traffic out from the darkness comes all these little black forms running by me, nearest one maybe 6 ft. away, ah a family of coons which I haven't seen any for two months, while counting them I see 4 or 5 little ones then two larger shapes, mom and dad, they go crashing into the tree line 25 ft. away, then from behind me comes this deep growl and its getting louder and louder, as I slowly turn my head all I see is darkness cause of the heavy planking on the corral and chute and the compost pile thats there, my options-- wife is sleeping, boss coon can cover the 12 ft. faster then I can move the rifle off my shoulder, will I need a first aid kit after this is over, but I do have my camera in my pocket, finally the coon goes by 12 ft. away and was quite large, into the bush and starts growling again, not as loud but never stopped, went back to the house and grabbed the 22 hoping that maybe they treed up for later. Never seen them again but the experience was better then three cups of coffee, thought I would share this with you.

Well I'll tell you there was more than a few goose bumps on me cause I was in a bad situation and the rifle was no help.

I hadn't moved the whole time and that boss coon really didn't sound very friendly and was more in the protective mode and I wasn't going to push my luck by going into the dark bush as it wasn't light!!!

Them coons can be vicious, and are very mischievious, they'll get into about anything that is left out. My parents had one climb under the hood of their car and gnaw on some wires. I've seen cats do that in the winter to keep warm, but thought a coon would have a home in the woods. He probably got evicted by something larger.

They're out there just waiting for you to make a mistake. Then they're going to climb you like a tree and pluck your elderberries.

When that boss Coon went by me it was twice as large as the parents and got down wind and went a little crazy in the bushes tearing it up and continuous growling, definitely not in a good mood.

I have had coons charge me...but have yet to have one attack me. The first time I was not sure what to do...it ran at me getting about 15 feet after running 40 or soo....I just acted bigger than I was and called his bluff.

Lots of coons here, there was one that came through my place last year, couldn't believe the size, had to be pushing 60#'s plus, my neighbor was over and were talking about coons, he shot 3 or 4 and I mentioned about this big coon, he shot one this year and said it was a way heavier than his golden retriever and that its teeth were just about wore out, he never kept it. Like in the post I hadn't cut any tracks for close to 2 months, they like melons and we just had our first ones today, checked the whole garden this morning and never seen any evidence they had been there, I'll put some lure on the electric wire and that will tune them up real fast.

Good story!

My pops always wanted a pet coon. Not sure what the heck he was thinking, but it's something he always talked about.

I had a pet coon when I was 9, his mom was road kill so I blocked him in a concrete culvert that went under our driveway and ran back through the woods behind our house to an old abandoned house that someone had raised minks at and left all the cages. I kept him for about 8 months at which time he started getting mean, so I let him go. We used to see him every so often for about the next year and I would go out and give him something to eat( Mom always knew when I had seen him as the vegies were gone) I haven't heard of my parents seeing any coons for quite a few years now.

I Coon Hunted for years with Dogs, they are tougher than nails!! I had a similar Situation with a ticked off mamma coon about 40 foot up a tree. She finally eased on down the tree and I was not far behind, thats what I get for trying to catch one of her babies though!! I Killed a boar coon years ago that weighed 40 lbs that was the largest I ever took. I know they get bigger though.

Right with ya RH. Had a buddies pup out with my old dogs one night and decided to see if the young pup had any fight in him so up I went to shag this coon out of the tree and send him down alive. Got about 20' up the tree and hit the light and there was one of the biggest coons I'd ever seen. End of tale---he got a .22 round between the eyes. When I got back on the ground my buddy says "Why didn't you shake him out?"

I told him "Shake him out?---I can't hardly pick him up"lol. Scaled that old boar at 48 lbs.

If you run you'll only die tired
