Here in Kansas it is illegal to use night vision to hunt coyotes at night. You cannot project visible or invisible (infrared) light or use anything that amplifies light (starlight scope). Would a thermal scope be legal? Anyone have any dealings with the legal issues of this?

Thermal would be like the starlight scope.  We can not hunt with them here either but, under trapping regs you can use artificial light for a few winter months.

I think it would depend on the wording. Thermal doesn't project any light at all, visible or IR.

I've checked Kass rules for this reason. Thermal is this a spectrum of infrared.

What I'm saying is that thermal doesn't gather any light at all to get an image. Ambient light has absolutely no effect on a thermal scopes ability to detect anything or get an image. I'm not saying it is or isn't legal.

I talked with someone pretty high up in the law enforcement side of the KDWPT and he just gave me a standard answer that it was illegal. After trying to pin him down as to why (no light source, no light enhancement, etc.) he said that I was welcome to do it, get caught, take it to court and get an official ruling on it. I'm afraid that if someone did this and got a favorable result then the KDWPT would just get the law changed to make it illegal.
