Hello folks,

I came here by way of Wild Ed's Texas Outdoors, one of your Pro Staffers!

I've been meaning to get into a little predator hunting, and even though Central Florida hides are sparce and somewhat thin, they are still more than adequate for buckskinning projects and such.

Anyway, I know we have yotes in the neighborhood, and I was wondering what steps I should take to create an appropriate blind, decoy (if necessary), and what calls would you recommend for a neophyte?

I will be using my Ruger 77 in 22 Hornet with factory soft points when the time comes.

Oh, and I might add, I am a big fan of books, so any suggestions?

First... I have to get out of Afghanistan...

Best regards,

Welcome to the site Albert. I'll assume that you are in Afghanistan with our troops and not vacationing, as I hear the sun keeps getting blocked by aircraft making a tan fairly hard to get let alone keep. Thanks for your service.

I don't use a blind, but a little of the appropriate camo works well. Find a bush to sit in front of(not behind) and call away. I would start with a rabbit distress, (they are fairly easy to blow). That Hornet should do the trick on them for sure.

Howdy fellows!

Thanks for the welcome! I should have clarified. I'm a contractor, though I am retired from the Army. Contractors do the jobs that the military is no longer interested in doing. It's a living.

I have a few things I would like to do, among them is, as I mentioned a little varmint hunting. One of these days I would like to get up north and hunt a couple of those big Dog Yotes that folks say are as big as a wolf! And get me enough of those thick furred racoons to make a blanket for my reading chair in the livingroom.

I'll roam around the forum and see what recommendations folks have on calls, and see if anyone can suggest a book or two. I like to read and would enjoy doing reviews on them.

Albert just came from Flordia and this is how i did it. Since it is so thick i got up in my tree stand , but i didnt go as high as i would to deer hunt cause i want the sound that im making closer to the ground (so it sounds more natural) Ill be honest i didnt call many out cause i was just starting out and i was using close reeds and sounding like a bag pipe. But it did work and thats what i would do now if i was fortunate enough to go back to Florida. I would get a open reed of your liking and start out with rabbit. I used
Model PC-1...Variable Pitch Predator Call by johnny stewart with good success. but thier are tons of good ones out thier. this was my favorite close reed call . good luck ill be over where you are soon

Welcome to the site!

Personally I wouldn't worry about decoys or blinds. Probably more gear and hassle than you need on your first few outings. (A blind you should never need).

Think a lot about setting up where you think coyotes will be (cant call something that's not there), and then get in quietly, call into the wind, or a cross wind, start off calling softly, and keep your eyes open. :)

Oh and read anything and everything you can find from the guys on this site. I am a noob myself... and have learned a TON from the guys out here.

Don't be shy with specific questions either. Lot's of good people out here willing to help.

Chris, thanks for the welcome, and I will keep your advice in mind!

Single Six, Don't you know, a Contractors work is never done! I'll be here, look me up! And yes there are plenty of jackels out here, especially on the south end of KAF... Remind me to tell you the story of the three cherry infantry guys and the jackels some time.
