Second year of bow hunting turkey and got my first kill, 28lbs, 11 1/4" beard, 1 3/8" spurs. I have been succesful at calling them in and also doing some stalking to within bow range but not getting a shot on them. Went out last Friday, Very windy and spotted two in a field strutting so grabbed my stuff and headed out. Set-up on the other side of a wooded creek area where I had seen them. I called off and on for around 1hr and 1/2 and got no response. So i decided to pack up and do some stalking. I know some people do not like the idea of stalking turkeys, but I am on private land and not worried about other hunters in the area. I do not stalk sound anyway, stalking by sight. I walked the creek and spotted the two toms about 75 yards downstream in the creek. I noted the surroundings and squatted down went to my left and got out of the creek. At this point I am thinking no way I can sneek up on these turkey within bow range. I used the terrain and the fortunate wind to block the sound to circle around in the woods to where I had seen them. I get to the location and look over the creek edge to see one of them looking directly at me. The smaller Tom just walks off slowly and the other realizes something is going on. I draw back as he us starting to walk away up the opposite bank, there is a branch in my way, so I have to adjust and then let loose. The shot is true, right at the base of the neck and the turkey drops in its tracks, and I about did the same. Heart pounding and could not explain the rush I felt. I had just stalked up on one of the weariest of birds and succesfully took it with my bow. I have taken deer, coyote, and now a turkey with a bow and continue to learn how and when to set-up and as time passes be succeful. For anyone out there hunting with any legal equipment, keep at it, the time will come and it will happen, dont give up.
